Can caries be infected?

Dental caries is caused by bacteria, so it is an infectious disease. A child is born without teeth and there are no bacteria responsible for tooth decay. These microorganisms enter the mouth from the environment, e.g. from the mother licking the pacifier. The condition for the development of caries is the presence of food for bacteria (food remains lying mainly in the grooves of the teeth and in the spaces between the teeth). That is why oral hygiene is important (children who are just a few months old need their teeth cleaned). There are no other effective ways to combat caries except prevention. Women planning a pregnancy should therefore have their teeth cleaned. In addition to brushing your teeth at least twice a day, you should also follow several rules: do not snack between meals, avoid sticky foods that stick to the tooth surface, limit eating sweets, and check the condition of your teeth. Emerging carious lesions must be treated as soon as possible.
